St. Petersburg Restaurant List
Gastronomy has come along way in St. Petersburg, and, these days, there’s a lot more around than just borshch, pork and fried potatoes. You can sample traditional Russian fare at most cafés and restaurants, or at one of the city’s numerous pancake (bliny) eateries. Food from the former Soviet republics is also easy to find, so try some Georgian, Uzkbek or Latvian restaurants while you’re here too.

| Description: |
This cheerful, cosy restaurant
called Na Zdorove (Russian for 'to your health!') serves excellent
Russian and Soviet cuisine – something you are not supposed
to miss when you visit St. Petersburg. Take our word, everything
we tried here, tasted really fresh – as if a Russian babushka
(grandmother) prepared it herself. Normally, our editor doesn’t
like pelmeni (Russian dumplings), but at Na Zdorove he cleaned
his plate! Try typical Russian drinks kvas and mors –
they are delicious. You can order Gorbachev’s favourite
soup: okroska (cold cucumber soup) á la Stavropol, the
area where the last Soviet leader was born. |

| Restaurant: |
Hongkong |
| Cusine: |
Chinese |
| Address: |
Ul. Sadovaya 42 |
| Phone: |
310 13 11 |
| Working hours: |
12:00-24:00 |
| Description: |
This modern and stylish restaurant
in the heart of Dostoevsky country with its view on Sennaya
Pl. has everything you’d expect of a good Chinese. In
fact, the menu is too big to read it all. What we tasted was
good quality, but not that spicy as was promised. If you like
exotic things this is your place – the menu promises turtle
filled with dates and other exclusive things. |
| Restaurant: |
Pavlin |
| Cusine: |
Chinese |
| Address: |
Konnogvardeisky bul. 5 |
| Phone: |
312 52 36 |
| Working hours: |
12:00-00:00 |
| Description: |
Pavlin lost some of its charm
when it moved from the Fontanka canal to its new location, but
the cook and staff have remained the same. The duck will set
you back 720Rbl, but that’s as pricey as it gets. The
best seats are out the back, behind the bar. We recommend the
Chinese shashliky, ornately presented on dozens of toothpicks. |

| Description: |
The quality at Le Français
is consistent, something we can’t say for a lot of restaurants
in St. Petersburg. It has a pleasant atmosphere, and there is
usually a pianist. We recommend the Bordelaise style beef, and
the cassolette with snails. In true French tradition, they also
have very good house wines. |

Country jewellery store, enter the hotel, take off your coat
at the cloakroom and then, turn to the right corner. There you
find Bella Leone, a first-class and delightful Italian restaurant
with attractive pictures on the walls. If you are a cheese-lover
try the Quattro Formaggi pasta, which comes with a spicy sauce.
The rabbit dish was also good. 20% discount between 12:00 and

| Restaurant: |
Borsalino |
| Cusine: |
Italian |

Bolshaya Morskaya ul. 39 (Anglettere
hotel) |

313 51 15 |
| Working hours: |
07:00-01:00 |
| Description: |
A black-marble bar dominates Borsalino,
which is dimly lit and modern. The atmosphere is relaxed, the
live music (often jazz) in the evening good. A favourite lunching
spot for local businesspeople. Friday evening is an all-you-can-eat
Italian buffet ($30) which brings succulent starters, main courses
and (chocolate) desserts. And you can orchestrate your own pasta
dish, which a cook will prepare for you right there. On other
days of the week the food is also nothing less than first-rate.

The genuine, Italian-style wood-fire

Italian salads, antipasto and seafood, is great value. Il Pation
has a central location and friendly staff, all of which explains
why it’s such a popular spot. |
| Restaurant: |

| Working hours: |
12:00-24:00 |
| Description: |
While the mini-windmills and clogs
on the walls may make you feel like you’re in the low
countries, there are no drugs on sale. Having said that, all
the food we tried was tasty and good value. We recommend the
sturgeon and bacon rolls. |

| Phone: |
387 59 55 |
| Working hours: |
11:00-23:00 |

Despite the Asian-style interior
and the Australian-sounding name, the food at Boomerang is basically
European. The dishes are prepared with creativity and care.
The roast beef entree is delicious. |

For tasty Hare-Krishna fare and
good Lassi, come to this little cafe hidden in a basement near
Ploshchad Vosstaniya. The staff are very friendly, but the servings
are quite small. No alcohol. |
| Restaurant: |
Kashmir |
| Cusine: |
Vegetarian |
| Address: |
Bolshaya Moskovskaya ul. 7 |
| Phone: |
314 23 00 |
| Working hours: |
11:00-23:00 |
| Description: |
A stone’s throw from Vladimirsky
cathedral, is one of the city's best vegetarian options. The
Indian décor and furniture are great and the staff friendly
and relaxed. Kashmir's food is delicious and beautifully presented.
We thought Panir shak (fried spinach with homemade cheese and
herbs) was particularly nice. The portions are small, and the
staff say it's best to order lots of dishes to share, rather
than just opting for a main. There is also has a wide assortment
of interesting Indian drinks, and for those of us who can't
manage without alcohol - even for one night - there is mulled-wine. |
